About : History

Crown Point is steeped in a legacy dating back more than 10 years.

From the organization’s inception, The Fall Collection has consistently maintained the ability to find and program the best work by artists who would later grow to critical acclaim.  In the 6 year history of The Phat Shorts Film Festival, notable filmmakers have included David Cronenberg (A History of Violence), Scott Coffey (Ellie Parker), Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas), Zoe Cassavettes (daughter of John Cassavettes and Gena Rowlands), Chris Cunningham (award-winning music video director for Bjork and Aphex Twin), Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), Chris Wedge (Shrek), Lee Davis (3 AM), Michael Almereyda (Deadwood and Hamlet starring Ethan Hawke), and Sylvian Chomet (Les Triplets de Bellevue).

Continuing to attract emerging and pioneering film talent for The Fall Collection and expanding that outreach to include theater and music, artists have included Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson), John Chuldenko (The Listening Party), Bill Morrison (award winning experimental filmmaker), Guggenheim Fellow and 9 time Obie Award winner Maria Irene Fornes, P73 Fellow and NEA Award winner Jason Grote, Spin Magazine featured band Colour Revolt and The Rinse who play with Billboard chart bands Maroon 5 and others.

1996: Phat Shorts is launched by filmmakers Andre Hereford and Byrd MacDonald to present an exhibition of innovative, challenging and entertaining work that emphasized craftsmanship and community over competition.

1998: Phat Shorts gains substantial exposure with sponsorship support from HBO and Remy Martin. Kelly Markus joins as a producer.

1999-2001: Ed Chiquitucto, Jorge Aguirre and Ryan Werner join Phat Shorts. The name of the organization is incorporated to PS, and it is produced at Anthology Film Archives with sponsorships from MTV Films, Eureka Pictures, Paper Magazine, The Village Voice, Skyy Vodka and Eastman Kodak among others.

2004: PS organizes a new festival, The Fall Collection, which displayed enormous potential and prompted a reorganization attracting an impressive new Board of Directors.

2005: PS evolves with new leadership and resources to grow from a small organization into a thriving arts entertainment business. This progression follows the important changes in the non-profit arts sector.

2006: Change of organization’s name to The Fall Collection, Inc. As in its origins, the organization will produce in the East Village and Lower East Side of New York City, representing the culture, heritage, community, and values from this area.

LOWER EAST SIDE HISTORY:

Originally, the Lower East Side (LES) was perceived as the area along the East River to the Manhattan Bridge. Also known as Crown Point under British rule, it was an important landmark for navigators for 300 years. On older maps and documents it was usually spelled Corlaers, but since the early 19th Century the spelling has been changed to Corlears. It was named after Jacobus van Corlaer, who settled there prior to 1640.
